BEARDS vs. Lymphoma – Making a difference in one local family’s battle!

January 20th, 2011
The following post is a special submission from local beard, Sherman Hill neighbor, bass player and all around great guy, Ben Tessman (a.k.a. @bentoons if you’re on Twitter).  Please read this, spread the word about it and consider making a modest $5 contribution to the fight against one brave man’s battle with Lymphoma.

James Biehn is a local musician here in Des Moines and was diagnosed with lymphoma late last year. He started treatment immediately after the holidays and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. We’re asking for your help, or at least to read this and pass it on to your friends.

James Biehn and his family are in the fight of their lives against lymphoma.

I am not sure if you are familiar with “Beardtoons,” so if not, please let me introduce you to what I’m doing. I’m holding a lottery-style fundraiser for James and I’m donating my beard. People who buy a ticket for $5 get the chance to mix-match styles on the attached poster and create facial hair styles to go on their Beardtoons “lottery” ticket. This Saturday, I will be drawing the winning ticket and will shave my beard to match that selected style. It will remain on my face until we run out of donations (each ticket sold also translates to .3 days). Donations to increase my pledge time are accepted until the time expires, and will be heavily promoted until then. It’s approaching 3 months already. You can view potential beard styles here.

Ben's Beard.

Cafe di Scala, Mars Cafe, Gusto Pizza Co, and other businesses in the metro are pitching in gift cards to generate more attention for Beardtoons. **UPDATE: Gift cards from Big City Burgers and Greens and Dos Rios Cantina and Tequila Lounge have been donated as well.** We are organizing a twitter contest for anyone who “retweets” about the Beardtoons website. For the contest, Cafe di Scala will also include people who have shared the link on their Facebook page and those people are entered into a drawing for a few of the gift cards. Anyone who donates to Beardtoons by Saturday will be entered into a second drawing for the remaining gift cards. If you know of a company or business interested in helping, tell them that they will be named towards the top of the website as a sponsor, which has raised over $700 in under 2 weeks & has been visited by nearly 6000 people already.

Two of my friends are joining me in holding similar beard “lotteries” & will be promoting the gift cards as well.

All proceeds are going straight to support James and his family to alleviate a mild amount of financial strain during his difficult battle with lymphoma. Complete details of the fundraiser can be found on the web at:

Please contact me, or my friend Phil K. James who will be organizing the gift card give-away, if you are interested in contributing or have questions. He can be reached via email at: phil.james [at]

Thanks very much for your consideration! Help me out by forwarding this email on to any other parties with potential interest.

P.S. Please pass this on to your friends via Facebook and Twitter and consider a donation. Thank you.

Happy New Year From Cafe di Scala!

January 6th, 2011

Greetings Scala Friends & Family!

We hope everyone had a fabulous December — celebrating by eating and drinking your way through with good company. While reflecting back on 2010, we’re incredibly appreciative of  the patronage of our loyal customers. In extending that thanks, we will be offering a couple incentives for the month of January. On Thursdays in January we will be waiving corkage fees during dinner. We also would like to buy every guest dessert who visits us for dinner.  The only catch is that we would love it if you would bring a friend in for dinner who’s never been here. Just mention this newsletter to one of our servers and we will take care of you.

Scala Sunday Beatles Brunch
It is that time of the month again, er, well, sort of… We moved our Beatles Brunch back to this Sunday, January 9th, from 10-2. Our Beatles Brunch can be viewed on the menu page of our website.  You may also call us at 515-244-1353 for reservations.

From a  casual three-course lunch to an evening appeitizer and cocktail party, our event planner will assist you in planning for that special dinning experience.  Think of us for anniversaries, birthdays, baby and wedding showers and wedding receptions.
