Help us celebrate seven great years!

July 11th, 2012

Celebrate 7 years with us on July 25th!

Happy Summer Scala Family & Friends!

Cafe di Scala is celebrating our seven year anniversary this month. Seven years! Amazing, huh? Four executive Chefs, 50 thousand pounds of homemade pasta and dozens of successful marriage proposals later, Scala has been one epic journey.

It’s astounding to think back to those final days leading up to Scala opening our doors on that hot and steamy Friday night  back in 2005.  Good pals Gabe Lueders, Mike Webster and I sawed boards, swung hammers and updated light fixtures for what seemed like an eternity of 15 hour work days. The late David Ryan, one of my best friends and greatest chefs to find inspiration, collaborated on a dinner menu.  Justin Berkley and Kevin Fazio fine tuned the beer and wine lists.  My parents (Tony and Lou Ann) worked on reconfiguring the dinning room space and tidying up things. (As my mother later admitted, the place was truly a “diamond in the rough.”) Throw in a couple dozen friends (Nicole & Phil James, Carlos Garza, Rob Jesmer,  a couple other Phils and many more, — apologies for not mentioning you) who helped landscape, brush on paint, sample food and provide moral support, that twenty-six year old kid (me) would have never been able to achieve the recognition and success without being surrounded by those wonderful people who championed my vision.

And we couldn’t have been here without the many thousands of customers like you. Bless you for being a part of what we do.

Visit the Cafe and celebrate the month of July with us!

Cafe di Scala Newsletter: Learn How to Make Pasta With Tony

February 23rd, 2012

Dear Scala Friends, Family and Sherman Hill Neighbors,

Spring is so close. You can feel it, right?

As I type this, I’m looking at a mama cardinal scavenge the ground for food here in Sherman Hill. As they build their nests and prepare to breed, a fresh late winter rain treats them with a shower of new life. We’re only a few weeks away from trees blooming, and next week, we’ll start some heirloom peppers and tomatoes from seed for the Cafe di Scala garden. Renewal feels awesome, doesn’t it?

Here are a few things coming up for you to keep on your calendar…

PASTA MAKING CLASS: Join me at Williams-Sonoma at Jordan Creek Town Center on Sunday, February 26 at 4:00 to begin their Guest Chef Technique Class Series with “Fast, Fresh, and Easy Pasta.” I will be teaching how to make basic pasta in addition to ravioli and combining with some great Williams-Sonoma recipes, which include Pasta with Eggplant. The class is free of charge but reservations are required. Call Williams-Sonoma at 515-225-6613 to save your place today. You also will receive 10% on your purchase that day if you attend the class (some restrictions apply). Hope to see you there!

BEATLES BRUNCH: Once again, we’re having our monthly Beatles Brunch on Sunday, March 4th from 10am-2pm. You can always find our Beatles Brunch menu up on our website. Call us at 515-244-1353 so we can save you a spot. Also, keep in mind that we are moving our April Beatles Brunch to April 9th to accommodate for some staff travel.

PRIVATE EVENTS: Everyone reading this knows someone having a baby shower, business lunch or a wedding rehearsal dinner this year. Please do us a huge favor and let your friends and co-workers know about us? We offer the entire Cafe exclusively for a private event Sunday through Wednesday for both Lunch and Dinner Events. Upon consulting with one of our staff, booking an event on a night we are open to the public (Th-Sat) may be an option depending upon the number of guests and budget. Learn morehere.

NEW WINES: At the café, we like to find as many unique Italian wines as we possibly can so that you can have an experience like nowhere else in Iowa. We offer almost 100 wines on our reserve list and pour 14 by the glass. Every couple months or so, we like to add a few fresh bottles to our reserve list. We recently added a few gems to this list and wrote a blog post about them. Read about the new wines here.

DINNER AND A SHOW: Hoyt Sherman Place, our neighbors just to the east of us on Woodland Avenue, have a great lineup this month and into early Spring. I hope you all take advantage of this spectacular venue as often as you can! Take a look at their website: http://hoytsherman.org/, and plan an evening with friends for a date night at Cafe di Scala and a show at Hoyt Sherman Place. We wrote about the lineup they wanted to share with you on our blog. Cheers!

NO CORKAGE FEE TONIGHT: Our Thursday no corkage fee deal is coming to a close tonight. Take advantage of this by bringing a friend in for a few laughs and good company.

Much love to you all!
Tony and Staff

P.S. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the most up-to-date information and special offers.

Join us this Holiday Season!

December 2nd, 2011

Dear Friends,

It’s been a great year here at Cafe di Scala. We hope you can join us this month for a toast with friends, a bowlful of homemade pasta or just to stop in to say a warm hello. Here are a few things to keep on your radar this month.

You can also call us during that time and we’ll take your gift card offer over the phone. You can use it yourself if you want, or you can give it to your friends, employees or co-workers. See you Friday the 16th and spread the word to your friends and family!

HOLIDAY PARTIES: Would you like to make a big impression this year by having your office/family/friends Holiday Party here at Cafe di Scala? We’re offering you an incentive to ask your boss to hold your company’s party at Cafe di Scala.  We’re offering a $50 gift card to you if your company ends up having their Holiday party at Cafe di Scala (for parties 20 or more). It’s a big incentive, but a huge thank you to you for spreading the word about us. So think of us the next time you plan a baby shower, office party, wedding shower, rehearsal dinner or anniversary party. Email our event planner Lisa Hutchins (eventplanner@cafediscala.com) if you have questions.

Have a blessed Holiday season!

So You Want to Have a Party: Part 2

November 19th, 2010

This is the second in an occasional series from Kelly at Socialize Events about how to properly prepare yourself for a private event for your business or personal gathering.  You can and should follow Kelly on Twitter.

§

Thanks again to Café di Scala for asking Socialize to guest blog! In our last post, Kelly gave you five tips on preparing for your event with a promise for a few more.

6. Transportation. The need for transportation varies widely depending on the type of event you are holding. If you plan to serve alcohol at a small social party you should be prepared with some taxi numbers on hand or know which guests can serve as a designated driver. If there is limited parking close to your venue, consider hiring a valet service.

If you are arranging group transportation for an event; create a preliminary schedule to get a fairly accurate quote. You should also ask if the company has a minimum usage (typically 2-4 hours), what they charge if you go over your time and if gratuity is included in the price. Send your provider a finalized itinerary at least a few days in advance of the event.

If there are schedule changes or your vehicle isn’t on time, be sure you can reach someone. Ask for your representative’s phone number, their cell phone number and at least one other number for a back-up person (personally, I always get the cell phone number of each driver as well).

7. Communication. Whether electronic or formal; an invitation sets the tone for your event. Once you have the location, date and purpose of the event nailed down send an Outlook appointment or a save the date postcard. Guests don’t have to know every detail to put a placeholder on their calendar.

When you are ready to follow up, make sure your invite includes the basics: host name, event name/purpose, date, time, location and address and the RSVP date and contact information. Some extras that are appreciated by guests are suggested attire and information on speeches, activities or special presentations (so guests know if there is a certain time they should be there).

For some options on electronic invitations, check out Evite and Punchbowl – which both offer free memberships. In Des Moines, visit Ephemera design and Pink Fine Stationery for fantastic paper invitation options.

8. Supplies. Whatever the event, you know there will be decorations or banners or registration lists to bring. But you should also consider how each banner, streamer or check-in list will get where it needs to go. Then, make a list of everything; everything, that you might need – like tape, scissors, zip-ties, boxes of pens, etc. Having supplies on hand (as opposed to running to the nearest Target 30 minutes before the party) will make set-up go so much smoother.

9. Logistics. Working out timelines and room layouts well before your event will save a lot of set-up time and help you get organized. For timelines, start at the beginning and work your way backwards to create a to-do list. Think through all the steps it will take to get to each end result and work these into your timeline. After your list is compiled, estimate the time it will take to accomplish each task and start building your timeline out. Working through this will also help you compile a supply list (see #8) and determine if there are holes in your planning.

For most events, a rough sketch of your room layout can also be a timesaver. When things like the buffet table and DJ locations are already determined, you can direct set-up without hesitation. If you’re working with a venue, ask them for a copy of the room dimensions. You should also get their opinion on what arrangement has best flow. TIP: Always try to keep the bar away from the entrance to avoid traffic jams.

Determining logistics is just one of the many reasons to consider hiring an experienced event planner. Socialize is a Des Moines event planning and management company that can handle any of your party or meeting needs, but there is always the option to bring us in to handle just the logistics portion of the event. We can create a master timeline, manage your vendors and be at the event to make sure everything runs smoothly.

10. Atmosphere (or everything else!). Of course, don’t be afraid to bring Socialize in for total event management if needed! What we wrote for Café di Scala’s blog is a list of basics you should have in place for a well-run event. But there are plenty of things to add to your event to create atmosphere at your event – décor, favors or handouts, activities, photographers. Whether it’s a New Year’s Eve celebration at home or a training conference at the office; think about what you want your guests to take away from it and what you need to achieve that. Of course, this will also bring more people/vendors/projects to manage into the fold. Just don’t be afraid to ask for help!

If you need any help planning your next event – learn more about what Socialize offers with a complimentary consultation. You can also check out our website and blog or follow us on twitter @socializeevents. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season of party planning and fun!
